Dear Alumni,
On behalf of the Yale Debate Association, I warmly invite you to an all-classes reunion honoring our centennial anniversary. The reunion will be held this fall on Saturday, October 18 in New Haven, Connecticut. Attire will be informal (suits and ties) for the dinner.
Over six hundred alumni have emerged from the YDA into diverse modes of leadership worldwide. The earliest alumni who exclusively debated Princeton and Harvard might not recognize the current institution that travels from New Hampshire to Bangkok. Yet the tradition of competitive success, rigorous technique, and provocative discussion continues. This reunion is about tracing the distinctive Yale debate experience, both in its continuity and its dramatic evolution.
Working with an alumni team that spans five decades, we have planned events to suit all ages and tastes. For those who want to (re)unite with past debaters, we've provided ample social opportunities during a Mory's toasting, cocktail hour, and dinner with live music. For those who prefer to celebrate history, early events include tributes to former coach Rollin Osterweis and alumnus Bill Buckley ('50). See the enclosed brochure and our website, www.yaledebate.org/reunion for more details.
The event highlight will be an intergenerational debate featuring four distinguished alumni: Akhil Amar ('80), David Frum ('82), Jake Sullivan ('98), and Tim Willenken ('03). We invite you to submit topic suggestions, from which the YDA board will select the final resolution. We ask only that the suggestions be serious and currently relevant.
Information about costs, registration, and accommodations can be found in the brochure. Registration and payment are due by September 15, 2008, though early submissions are preferred. You may register online at www.yaledebate.org/reunion/registration.php. Spouses and significant others are welcome. As you plan, please expect to attend scheduled activities throughout the day. You may also contact your decade representative(s) on the alumni task force to coordinate class-specific activities; see their contact information on our website.
Please encourage all of your classmates to attend. We look forward to seeing you in October!
Sincerely,
Erin L. Miller
Executive Board Member
